Design It Clean Project
How it works
Our filter is designed for the farmers of Narriabi. The filter attaches onto the irrigation pipe that the farmers use. It works by having a multiple layers therefore giving a very thorough cleaning of the water. Although we have taken into consideration that methane is in the water it doesn't affect the agricultural aspect of Narriabi we still wanted to filter it out for overall water safety for the people. As a result we mainly focused on filtering out ammonia how we did this was to use carbon which has a natural tendency to filter out ammonia in a safe way anyways. The use of this filter helps the farmer's plants and animals have access to clean and safe water whether thats for the animals or the food produced using the water. Due to the community of Narriabi mainly using the contaminated water for agricultural use, this filter fits all their needs and helps to be more safe and clean for the environment and people.

Snow Science Poster
1. In what ways was Snow Science relevant to your life?
As a person who spends a lot of time outside in the spring and the winter it is important for me to understand what dangers there are in snowy weather and how I could keep myself and other safe in any situation.
2. What do you now understand about the role snow and water play in the American West (be specific)?
I now know that the wind and the moisture plays a big role in when and were we will get snow. It also is important to understand how the snow will effect the following seasons we have here in Durango. For example if there is a big snow year then we will have a lot of snow runoff in the spring and that will effect the crops and the forest fires.
3. What skill (Science based or 21st century) did you develop through engaging this material?
How to identify signs of a avalanche is important since I live in Colorado. If I didn't know how to do this then it would be very hard for me to know the signs of an avalanche.
4. What is one thing that you particularly enjoyed doing/learning, what is one thing you struggled with/did not enjoy? I thought it was hard to understand the why the snow was melting so fast right now, although I new it was from global warming.

Rocket Project
We will test the effect of fin shape on the launch height of the rocket. we will do this by launching two separate rockets, which have different fin shapes. One rocket will be equipped with cylindrical fins, and the other will be triangular. We will then compare the total heights of the rockets, to see which fin design yields the highest launch.
We researched
Rocket fins and found that professional water rockets use an angled rectangle that is thinner at the end than it is closer to the main body of the rocket. We learned that this was done to increase the amount of air resistance around the bottom of the rocket, which will increase the tendency of the bottom of the rocket to resist change in position, thus stabilizing it. We hypothesized that since friction and air resistance are based on surface area that a fin shape that had more surface area for the same amount of volume (a cylinder) would better stabilize a rocket.
Rocket construction guide
Our design utilized a tall body with a three bottle compression chamber and, as justified by our test, Three cylindrical fins near the nozzle of the rocket. Our design was based on the idea of maximizing the stability of our rocket, and maximizing the amount of force our rocket can exert as thrust. Stabilization was focused on, because it allows all force of the launch to be converted into the rocket height, and minimize the amount of force lost due to a change in the rocket’s horizontal orientation. This was done by making the rocket tall, and using cylindrical fins. The amount of force that our rocket could exert was focused on, because this variable would allow for the rocket to go the highest, and would be the most influential factor in the height of our rocket. We maximized the amount of force our rocket could exert by using a compression chamber made of three bottles.
conclusion
Through our experiments, we found that a cylindrical fin shape give superior height when compared to a fin of a different shape, thus proving our hypothesis. During our tests, we had a recurring problem of pressure chamber malfunctions, which led to a catastrophic explosions on the launch pad. I would recommend that future students who undertake this project learn from my mistakes and make sure that all seems in the bottles are thoroughly covered with epoxy. These tests helped us to improve our design by allowing us to determine that fins shaped in a cylindrical shape are the most effective fins to use.
