Intelligence Squared Debate
For the Intelligence Squared debate we analysed how debaters debate and how debates are ran. We did things such as flow and actual debate by intelligence squared, Make our own arguments and gather evidence in which we would soon use for cut cards. We split into four groups in each classroom. So in each group there was around eight people. Half of those people was for the motion and the other half was for against the motion. I had the role of a constructive argument so for the given time I had I worked on making a strong argument for my side. I like how we gather our information before we knew which part we were going to be assigned because it made it easier to find the right information when we needed to use it.
It was surprising how much my understanding of the middle east changed after doing this project. I didn't really know much about it. After learning about the middle east, terrorism, and U.S policy my view changed completely. I not probably know more about the middle east and what's actually happening than most people in this country. I feel like it is very important for people to be educated about the middle east, and this project really helped me understand it more. I’ve actually showed some of my research with and assignments to my family to educate them about the middle east.
It was a great experience to participate/win a debate. The best argumentative skills I have gained throughout this project is to have evidence. Evidence is the best way to sway a group of people to believe in your position. For example during the debate one of the members on the other team asked me for an example of a suspected terrorist that was proven innocent. Luckily for me I had three cut cards of evidence that was related to the request. I decided to use one of them and I definitely make an impact in the debate. At this point I was grateful that my group and I had gathered this information.
