Happiness Art Project
For the Happiness Art project I decided to design a street art inspired piece that is simple but sends the message across. I chose to incorporate a little girl in it because I feel like the youth is sometimes the most happiest kinds of people in our country. She is spray painting the message "Happiness Is Beautiful" In red spray paint, and finishing it off with a un-thoughout heart overlapping it. I choose to use the phase "Happiness is Beautiful" because I felt like this was the most important part of happiness that anyone can agree on. I was planning on spray painting this image on a dumpster or a wall in my school, although I though of the idea of having then on stickers so that I can put them in various places in Durango and I visit. I feel like this is more important because more people will see it.
What is Happiness and Why is it Important?
The most essential question every person encounters once in their life. What is happiness? Is it the moment you get a giant check from your job, buying a brand new car, helping an elderly person cross the road, holding the door for a family at a restaurant, spending time with the people you love. There are too many definitions for the word happiness. Because, happiness has different meanings to each and every person. People spend their whole lives trying to find happiness in their lives. Most people believe happiness only comes from money, so they dedicate their whole lives trying to make as much money as they possible can. Some people will only get a sliver of it, and other will have it their whole lives. Everyone agrees that it may be the most important feeling a person can have. You have, as an individual human being, needs to suffer, feel real emotions, and fail to find happiness and meaning in life; you have to be optimistic and move on when something goes wrong, as a citizen of the community you need to ensure support to the people, accepting their issues and support them.
Every human has the capability to feel all emotion since the day we were born. Its in our DNA; our brains our are wired to feel happiness, sadness, and anger. We can’t stop our brains from feeling different emotions, it comes from different experiences we have throughout our lives. Although it is harder for some people to accept negative feelings from bad experiences that doesn't make us more happier than what we are already. We think if we only focus on the good things then we will only be happy and nothing any less. The American dream “to be happy”. In the documentary “Happy”, they had a clip where they were interviewing random americans on the street asking them. “What do you want to have in life?” Most of them said positive messages but he most common phase was “To be happy.” Now I ask why aren't we already happy? We were born to be happy and have no hatred for anything in the world, wouldn't it be easy to contain this emotion since that is what we were given first? We can’t stop our brains from feeling different emotions, it comes from different experiences we have throughout our lives. From losing your only job to the heavy hearted feeling when you leave your favorite stuffed animal at the hotel room. As humans we need to have these feelings it’s how we grow and believe it or not, it’s what makes us happy. What I had learned from the movie happy is that most people cover their problems with false information, they won't be happy. If you ignore the fact that something really sad happened to you and you are scared of being the most depressed person from that incident, then when you resolve the problem, you would feel as happy and as grateful if you were to just brush the issue away. When I was little I left my favorite toy at a playground. We went back a day later to find it was still there (Crazy no one stole it, although it was a limbless arbie doll covered in nail polish.) I can’t begin to explain the feeling, although is was somewhere along the lines of a floating heart feeling pasted with the biggest all tooth grin when I saw Barbie sticking out from the woodchip covered ground. I could have forgot about the toy and gone to the store with my mom and bought a brand new Barbie, Clothes and long hair included, but it would never exceed the feeling when you find your limbless Barbie sticking out of the ground. Humans do have a connection with the things they love and when they lose them, like a job, a game, or in my case a barbie doll. There is definitely a feeling that is really hard to mend if you don't accept it and move on or try to resolve it. Bottom line, failure and knowing you have failed will lead to happiness.
Having the capability to be an optimistic person is essential, for generating happiness from almost anything. I am probably the most optimistic person in my whole family. “It can get annoying” my dad says too often. For example when my family's boat caught on fire, the most iconic complete disaster. My family was miserable for weeks. We decided to use the weekends for camping trips in Moab and Indian Creek. I feel like we are just as happy because we were still spending time together. From the documentary “I am” they mentioned that the goal for humans is to separate themselves from the pack; People need to be different and find different ways to live their life so they don't have too many expectations from themselves or from other people. Being the happiest person in a group is ok, although we think it would be a bad thing if we were abnormal, this is what holds us back from being happy. If people tell us that we are weird or different than the general public we normally think it is a bad thing, although we should be original and optimistic about life. Happiness for the majority comes from low expectations of ourselves. If your expectations for happiness are high you won't ever get happy very easily or even at happy at all. When you have goals in life you need to have the survival skill of optimism to actually have the motivation to reach the goals. If you keep low expectations and are optimistic about things you will succeed at being happy.
Willing to support Family and Friends is the most important part of being happy. All Americans were born with the right of freedom of speech. We as Americans know this everyday, it is repeatedly said every day and mentioned to the public constantly. Although we know it is present we seem to forget and ignore it. There are still racist and sexsist people in our country today that beat the opinions and ideas of other people. We forget to help each other because most people see life as a game and like any game they want to win. From the Ted Talk “We Mimic Other Humans” the said “A dog is never born an aggressive animal, like a baby they were never born sad.” Dogs are breed to be loving human companions, never a threat to human and their safety. Despite the fact that there has been many incidents where a dog has injured or even killed a person. All these dogs are in fact socialized by humans to attack, or in the worst case they were beaten by humans and are now afraid of humans which can lead to anxiety issues, or attacks. For example this year my family rescued a Siberian Husky from New Mexico, who had history of abuse, malnutrition, and no kind interaction with other dogs or humans. When the volunteers arrived to our house he was a scared, underweight, lengthy guy who we could obviously tell never been in a car before. He was scared at first but after lots of love and fatty dog food, he is the most loving happiest dog I have ever meet. Without support and love from family and friends you will be a very miserable person. I feel like my dog, Ziggy, was a good example of this. If he never had a supporting family he would be a very sad dog with horrible anxiety issues. Most people in America don’t stay connected to their family and friends and end up dedicating their life for work and money. They normally aren't happy. There is definitely a happy feeling when you make a lot of money, we have to admit it there is no evidence that money doesn't make us happy. Even though money makes everyone happy, nothing can beat the feeling of having your family support you. People make other people happy, without interactions people would have to make themselves happy which would take a lot more effort.
People can are capabil to feel any emotion, along as they allow themselves to. We can’t stop ourselves from having natural feelings from our life decisions and events. Having the capability to be an optimistic person is essential, for generating happiness from almost anything. When you have goals, you need to have the survival skill of optimism to actually have the motivation to reach the goals. Without optimism, you will live a miserable life. Supporting Family and Friends is one of the important part of being happy. We need to interact with humans on a daily basis to be a happier person. Humans are social, and without the interaction of them we will be lonely and sad. It is the most important feeling a person can have. What is Happiness? Happiness is the feeling when you found you lost dog, or the moment you realize that being fired was the best thing that happened in your life, or even the day you visit you grandma. Happiness is the key to enjoy life.

Model United Nations Project
Project Description
For the Model United Nations project we were each assigned a country and we had to represent that country throughout the past couple of months. We were given a issue and knowing where our country stand by that issue, then we would have to write a resolution and a policy paper on that issue. I had the country Japan, and Japan had a lot of different perspectives on the issues we were given. It was a fun experience trying to fight for what your country believes.
Project Description
What would you tell another student if they asked why the MUN project was important?
I would tell another student who would be doing the Model United Nations project to be on top of thing because if you were to get behind on a assignment it is really hard to find where you were in and catch up. For example I didn't work on one of my resolution because I missed that day in school. Later when the Resolution was due I was rushing to get the paper in, although it wasn't as good as I hoped. I would always check Sara’ DP to know the requirement for the certain assignment. If I would still need help I would send a brief email to her asking what she is expecting.
Think of this project overall- which habit of mind were you most proud of using during the conference?
Of all Habits of Heart and Mind I personally know I was able to rely on is Advocacy for sure. For example in my Resolution writing I decided to advocate on the topic to make as good as it can get. here is a excerpt in my writing piece that I felt like is the most closes to advocacy “Alarmed by the fact that the Palestinians were chased out of their land the Japanese government, already having a strong history with the Arab countries acted quick to the situation and was planning on boycotting Israel and dispatching the Jewish citizens to Europe and Russia,”. I really needed to look through the perspective of the Japanese government to be able to write such strong and independent part in my resolution.
What was the greatest challenge you faced in the project and how did you work through it?
The most greatest challenge in this project was to keep the writing pieces formal but still interesting. I had a tendency to not use the right vocab in some of the writing assignments. I think next time I have a writing assignment in a class I will definitely try to keep this in mind next time.
What was the most interesting speech, resolution, amendment, or comment by one of the delegates?
During the conference I thought that Toree McKenney's speech, who is the representative of South Africa. Here speech was the last of the speeches and I thought it was really cool how she wrapped up the conference at the end of the speeches. The difference between her speech and the other speeches is that hers was really funny and sarcastic, it was very necessary because it got the attention of everyone elses.

Greek Tragedy Graphic Novel
I am most proud of Izzy and I’s writing component because I feel like I was really able to grasp the choruses role and what they had to say throughout the play. I actually knew a lot about how to write a decent poem so that helped me a lot. We wanted our chorus to have the ending word of the line to rhythm with every other lines’ ending word. “Her boyfriend, Maxwell is a bad person, The drugs have taking over his mind, Everything he is doing is making it worsened, And now Emilia is blind.”
If you are planning on making a graphic novel for your greek tragedy I would suggest to make sure you going to have enough time to actually finish the project with sometime before the project is due to save you some time to make final revisions. I would suggest that you would spend more time on the project in the beginning of the project so you don't have to rush and finish at the end, this would help make sure you spend your extra time refining it. I think we did a pretty good job on our pictures, in my opinion the visual is one one the most important part besides the content because your viewer can really relate and visualize it. I thought what went well with the partners that there was always someone working on the project and if you need help you partner can help you with it. I also liked the partners because they were there to bounce ideas off of you. For example Izzy thought of the idea of making the characters have full bodies, but instead I said just to do heads. In the end of the project this helped us because we barely had enough time with just the heads and to imagine having to draw the bodies. Over all I am pretty proud of how we portrayed the chorus. I thought it was a good idea to make the curious the Newspaper Team. The most challenging part of the project was putting the images together because Izzy had problems with sharing the document which had all the work on it, although she finally did she had most of the work was done and I didn't have anything to work on.
The most overcoming part of this project was starting from scratch because I didn't really know how to develop a character like how they looked or acted. How I was able to overcome this by imagining someone I know and adding or taking away some of their characteristics.
“Teenage Girl” pro or con?
As babies are born they are implanted into the cycle of socialization, traditional expectations for boys and girls continue throughout their life. In the past, much research focused on how teachers were misleading girls in the classroom. Teachers would focus on boys, calling on them more and challenging them to be more academically involved within the school system. Because boys were believed to be more astute on the behalf of girls, teachers assumed they would excel in math and science. Teachers encouraged them to go into careers that require a lot of math and science, to become computer scientists, doctors, engineers, and mathematicians. It is normal to assume that young boys (eventually most will become agents) will be the “money maker” in the family rather than the girls. That is why some teachers ask “Why bother teaching girls if they are just going to end up taking care of the kids?” We are all fed the norms to categorize people of the bat whether we mean to or not. It is how we are socialized. As an American teenage girl I have been socialized to “accomplish” being physically perfect, how I am looked down on by the world for my age, and why the phrase “teenage girl” is brutalized in this world.
As an American teenage girl, growing up in the 21st century, I am brainwashed to fit the standard tier for young women. In the movie Mean Girls there is lots of scenarios of unreal examples of young women “We only carry sizes one, three and five. You could try Sears.” and “I need to lose three pounds.” I feel like this movie is full of stereotypes for gender, race, class, and age. As a young girl I played with barbie dolls and watched barbie movies. I was socialized to play with barbie dolls, have long hair, wear dresses, and to do “girl” sports. That is just how kids are socialized. Young girls never really have the opportunity to play with marble tracks or legos, because at a young age they are scared of breaking the standard norms.
I like to break rules, and as a rule breaker there is always a reason to be denying the norms. I am a dedicated athlete and I have to train hard mentally and physically to reach my goals. Most people say “Oh you rock climb, but not what the guys do right?”, “I thought that the sport was a male dominated sport?” and ”How do you keep up with the guys?”. For some reason people don't want to think that girls can be as good or better than boys at athletics and apparently rock climbing too. This year I made it to the Speed Climbing Nationals in June which took place in Atlanta, Georgia and I am planning on being in the 2014 Youth Mixed Climbing Worldcup this winter. When I was eight my mom signed me up for this summer adventure camp. I really enjoyed it and one of the girl coaches asked me if I have ever climbed before. I answered “no” and she suggested that I should start to climb. A couple years later I decided to try it again and decided to stick with it. My friend Soma and Katie asked me what is my main motivation when I climb I told them “So I can show people that boys aren't always better at climbing as girls.” I like to be an inspiration for young girls to be strong and to prove to themselves they can be better than what society wants them to be. They need to be their own heroes.
There is a good reason that the stereotypical view of modern teenagers is a lazy kids who just want to sleep in, play computer games, surf the net and hangout with their friends. Why do people think this? Is this always true? Because I feel that the most decisive group of people are the ones in their teenage years. I see everyday determined people putting so much time and effort in their school work and in the things that they love. Why do people think that teenagers are dishonest or their voices aren't as important as Adults? In the article Teenagers: Why Do They Rebel? Jeanie Davis clearly states “It may seem that they argue for the sake of arguing. But really, they’re practicing their new abilities.”Just because you are a teenager doesn't mean you can't accomplish what adults can do. Many people (adults in general) don’t agree with this. No matter what you are going to have uninspired people who don't want to do anything; Kids, Teenager,Adult, and even Elderly.
I was in the car with my dad and eight year old sister Chloe, I asked them this riddle “There is a doctor and a boy, The boy is the doctor’s son. Who is the doctor?” My sister shouted out “The doctor is the dad!” “Wrong answer” I said. After continuous random answers from my sister my dad finally said “The doctor is the boy’s mom.” The chances of the doctor being the boys mom is the exactly the same as being the boy’s dad. We are just socialized to think doctors are automatically going to be a male. From the Los Angeles Times the author Deborah Vankin Stated "Truly? Why was this "overall drag down" never discussed when females were forbidden full educations and jobs other than the most menial?" I agree with Deborah because in my classroom boys will say they want to go to medical school and there is barely any girls who do.
The way people look down on teenage girls is both negative and positive. Starting from the beginning, when we are first born, to the day we die. Why we as women are stuck with thinking that all that we are going to do in life is to take care of children. Teenage girls are brainwashed to think they need to be pretty and care about nothing else. I love sports and as I girl I have to work extra to achieve my goals. The stereotype that “girls can't be as good at sports then guys” that is why I climb hard, to prove people wrong. You can be any age or gender to inspire people, you can be your own hero.
My mask was mountain themed because I grew up in the mountains my whole life and I love climbing, hiking, snowboarding, and anything really that has to do with being outside. The climber represents me “climbing” to reach my goals, I like this because climbing is my life and I feel like I need to literally “climb up” to my goals. The cliff represents the things I have to pass in life, with my own describing words painted on it.

In the past, much research focused on how teachers were misleading girls in the classroom. I agree with Deborah because in my classroom boys will say they want to go to medical school and there is barely any girls who do.
Project Reflection
I am very proud of my mask because It really represents me and what kind of person I am. I feel like my mask really complements my essay because It is both about climb and about breaking the standard stereotypes for girls with athleticism. How I tied my mask and my essay together is demonstrating the climber climbing up the cliff and the positive describing words written on the side.
My favorite quote from my essay that I wrote ”My friend Soma and Katie asked me what is my main motivation when I climb I told them “So I can show people that boys aren't always better at climbing as girls.” I like to be an inspiration for young girls to be strong and to prove to themselves they can be better than what society wants them to be. They need to be their own heros.” I really liked this project because I liked to see what my other classmates chose as a subject and how that affected them and how I could relate to them.
The biggest takeaway from this project is that I realized that I am not the only one who is feels like girls are being treated differently them guys, there is a lot of other girls who feel this way as well. I feel like I will use what I learned from this project for the rest of my life. knowing that everybody is going to have to deal with problems and stereotypes sometime in their life.
If I had to chose on habit of heart and mind to make my project better I would chose refinement for sure, because I feel like I could of refined my essay to be the absolute best as it can possibly be.
