Title of Project: Chemistry of Food and Cooking EMS Protein cookies
b. How can we measure the qualities and desirability of a finished recipe both quantitatively and
Qualitatively in order to determine the success of our recipe experimentation?
When you want to change the quantity of a recipe you need to remember to divide the whole whole recipe. You need to include all of the ingredients. Can’t just do it to one, but you will have to do it to everything. For example I didn't have enough protein powder to make a full batch of cookies. So I had to divide ALL of the ingredients by two, so I wouldn't actually mess up or change the recipe. If we wanted the recipe to be different we could change one of the ingredients until we got the results we wanted.
c. In what way(s) is cooking like doing science and in what way(s) are they different? How are a cook and a food scientist similar or different?
In a lot of ways cooking is science. You need to have the right ratio of ingredients to make the ideal product. If you add to many eggs to a cake it will be too fluffy and dry, or if you don’t add baking soda it won't have the right texture. Baking is all about molecules bonding and changing their form to make something different.

Explain your understanding of the relationship between combusting fossil fuels, the greenhouse effect and climate change in a manner that would be appropriate for teaching a middle school student.
When we are burning a large amount fossil fuels it produces more emissions than the earth can naturally get rid of. The large quantities of emissions in our atmosphere impacts the earth in different ways. The amount of emissions in the atmosphere creates almost like a blanket for the earth. When sunrays pass through the earth's atmosphere it can't go back out because of the blinket. This process overall warms the earth.Warming of the earth causes ice caps to melt, sea levels to rise, and causes change in all climates. This destroys habitats, ecosystems, and species.
What is the role of scientists and engineers in society? In what ways is life as we know it better (or worse) because of their work either in basic scientific research or the development of implementable technologies?
We rely on scientists and engineers to make sure we are being smart about how we fossil fuels for energy. I don’t think they thought about how the impact of the consumption of fossil fuels will affect the earth in the future. Scientists and Engineers now need to be aware of how to solve the issue of too much emotions so it doesn't lead into more extreme issues in the future. I believe that my generation is going to be the generation that is going to change how we get our energy. We need people to believe that climate change it real and that they are passionate about fixing that. We need people to be able to accept change to fix/help our planet.
